Technoeconomic Analysis
Technoeconomic analysis estimates the cost of a process or technology from its mass and energy balances, equipment sizing and capital and operating costs. It is often reported as a levelized cost per unit of product, and is used to compare process pathways, locate cost drivers and test sensitivity to assumptions.
Levelized cost of hydrogen delivery pathways (2025)
Yuan and coworkers built a component-based model, drawing on Argonne’s HDSAM v3.1, that reports the levelized cost of hydrogen by component, process step, location and pathway for compressed hydrogen, liquid hydrogen and formic acid delivery (Yuan et al. 2025). Inputs included California 2022 electricity and diesel prices and electrolytic hydrogen with the full 45V credit. Catalyst amount and reactor size came from atomistic models. The analysis identified formic acid synthesis, separation and CO2 recycling as the dominant costs. It also showed that dehydrogenation pressure, through its effect on downstream compression, matters more to station cost than catalyst activity or lifetime. Summary: yuan2025.
